Family Home Evening – An Easter Message

This is a perfect family night outline for the Monday before Easter.  I think it’s really important to focus on the real essence of Easter, during that special week leading up to Easter, so our kids will have Christ’s resurrection on their minds and in their hearts long before the Easter bunny comes. Thanks to Times and Seasons, and Sugardoodle  for this fantastic idea!

Ahead of time, you will need to collect the following items:
  • 12 plastic Easter eggs numbered 1-12, and each of the following in the corresponding egg:
  1. A small leaf, real or fake, resembling a palm leaf
  2. A piece of cloth with a spray of perfume on it
  3. A small piece of tortilla
  4. A small picture of your family
  5. Three dimes
  6. A piece of purple cloth
  7. A toothpick made into a cross
  8. One small nail
  9. A small piece of paper that reads THE KING OF THE JEWS
  10. One bay leaf and a clove
  11. A piece of white linen cloth, and one round stone
  12. Leave this one empty.
Once they are filled, hide them around the house, in the basement, or outside in the yard.
Begin family night by telling the family that there is an Easter egg hunt to kick off FHE, and have them go find the eggs and bring them to the Easter basket.
As you open each one, in order, have someone read, or take turns reading the following verses, discussing what each one means.  You may have to down scale for small children:
#1    Matthew 26:39
#2    Matthew 26:14-15, thus fulfilling the prophecy in Zechariah 11:12-14
#3    Matthew 27:1-2
#4    Matthew 27:24-26
#5    Matthew 27:28-30
#6    Matthew 27:31-32, and he was crucified and nailed to a cross.
#7    Matthew 27:35-36
#8    Matthew 27:46, 48
#9    Matthew 27:50-51, 54
#10    Matthew 27:57-60
#11    Matthew 28:1 (bringing sweet spices to anoint Him) 2,  and verse 5
#12    Matthew 28:6  “He is not here: for He is risen as He said.”
In order for the family to keep this in mind all week, I will print this out from the Friend magazine, or tear it out of the magazine if you have the particular copy from 2011,  and hang it close to where we gather for scriptures each night. Then, each night during the week we can remind ourselves what occurred on that day.  This will keep our thoughts centered on Christ, which is the goal.

To finish up, we will watch this special video.  Happy Easter week everybody!
