Family Home Evening – “Secret Servers”

Do your kids need to think outside themselves?  Service is the answer!

Today I will be baking a couple batches of homemade sugar cookies, along with 2 colors of frosting – red and green.  We will not frost the cookies, but scoop the frosting into small disposable containers to give away along with the un-frosted cookies.

Here’s the plan…
Tonight, we will begin by reading the scripture Luke 22:27:
“For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.”
As true followers of Jesus, we must also serve others.
We will talk with our children about how love is more than a feeling.  When we love others, we want to help them.  We will discuss and brainstorm ideas of ways that we can serve our neighbors, friends, and members of our own family.
Then we will review the scripture :
“When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.”
We will then watch this short video.
After the video, we will challenge the kids to think of ways that they can emulate Christ-like love by serving others.
THEN…

Since we haven’t done this for a few years, we thought it would be fun to have them be Secret Servers.  They will each draw a name from a hat so that everyone has someone else’s name.  They will not tell anyone whose name they have, but they will perform secret acts of service for that person throughout the week.  I will have little “You’ve been served!” coins for them to leave in case the service isn’t easily recognized.  Ideas:  make their person’s bed, do their kitchen job, leave a note, make a Christmas countdown paper chain for them, leave a treat on their pillow, put toothpaste on their toothbrush, warm up the car for them, pack their lunch, fold the laundry, etc.

Lots of ways to serve!

To finish off the evening, we will pack everyone into the car along with the cookies, the frosting containers, and a small note on a platter wrapped in cellophane, to deliver to a couple families of our choice.
Perfect family night for the month of December!  Feel free to copy this idea or make it better!
Share the love…
and have a great Monday night!!

Do you happen to have any… Read more »

Hi Julie! How fun that you all get together for FHE! That would be fun to do here, sometime, with all the Allens! This might be a little harder, where you don't all live together, but off the top of my head what about dropping off dinner, putting a nice love note in the mail telling them what you love about them, (with no return address) heart attack their yard, shovel their walks — wait you are in S.G. haha The fun part would be to see what everyone else comes up with! It would take some thought, but that's… Read more »
