Family Home Evening – The Courage Of A True Disciple
Another Conference weekend has come and gone, and oh how I love those weekends! Nothing fills up my soul and makes me happier and more content with my life, than hearing from the mouths of the Prophet and the Apostles! In the October 2013 session of General Conference, Elder Robert D. Hales said, “The greatest blessings of general conference come to us after the conference is over. Remember the pattern recorded frequently in scripture: we gather to hear the words of the Lord, and we return to our homes to live them.”
So, I have decided for the next several Family Nights, we will base lessons around one of the conference talks. Tonight’s lesson will be taken from Elder Jeffrey R. Holland’s Saturday morning address, which I loved by the way, I guess because I love him so much!
Click here to listen to his talk.
He is amazing.
Here is the breakdown of our family night:
- Object lesson: In my hand I will hold a feather and ask someone to come blow as hard as they can. It will, of course, blow away easily. Then, I will hold a rock in my hand and ask someone to come blow as hard as they can. I will ask one or two of them to try, and even the big strong teenager to come blow the rock off, and of course, the rock will remain still. If our testimonies are weak, we will be caught up in the whirlwinds of the world. But if they are strong and have their foundations in Christ, we will be able to stand firm despite trials and temptations.
- I will retell the story from Elder Holland about the sister missionaries who was almost hit by a man, and then had food spit on them. We will discuss some situations that may arise in their own lives, and how we are told to “defend your beliefs with compassion, but defend them!” Some good situation examples can be found by clicking here, in the “Here Am I, Send Me” family night lesson.
- We will talk about what it means to be a true disciple. In some instances we may feel like we want to “put up our dukes,” but instead we should follow the example of the Savior, and show courage. Tell the story of Abinadi. In the Book of Mormon, the prophet Abinadi was bound and brought before the evil King Noah. Although the king vigorously opposed Abinadi and eventually sentenced him to death, Abinadi boldly taught the gospel and bore his testimony anyway. Because Abinadi took advantage of that opportunity, a priest named Alma was converted to the gospel and brought many souls unto Christ. The courage of Abinadi and Alma was Christlike courage.
- We will play this game: Discipleship ABS’s: “I will be a true disciple of Christ when I am at _____________.” Fill in the blank with something that begins with the letter A, like the airport. Continue, each person taking a turn through the alphabet.
- Refreshments!
Of course always end with testimony and a prayer!
Happy Family Night!
