Family Home Evening – The Family Olympic Games

Tonight, in honor of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi going on right now, I decided it would be fun to have an Allen Family Olympic Games night! We played the following games with our family:
Camera Hot Potato
How To Play:
Set the self-timer on the camera and the game begins. Each player must hold the camera at arm’s length and point it at themselves very briefly (like a selfie), before passing it on to their left.
Keep going, until eventually the camera goes off with a flash of light, and much laughter. Check out the shot before starting again.
The photos you get will be very amusing.
Murder
How To Play:
Each player draws a card. All cards should be number cards, (2-9) except for the murder card which is a Queen of Hearts or Ace of Spades. The player that draws the Ace card is the murderer. All the others are the victims/detectives.
The murderer tries to secretly wink at people to kill them. If someone has been winked at, they must turn over their card and fake death. They are dead and out of the game.
Players try to spot the murderer as he kills them. If you suspect the killer, you announce, “I know the killer” and pronounce the murderers name. If you are correct, the murderer must reveal his card. If you are incorrect, you must flip over your card and are out of the game.
Play continues until the murderer has been discovered or all the victims are dead.

Honey I Love You
How To Play:
The person in the middle can go to anyone in the circle and say “Honey I love you, won’t you give me a smile?” The person who was asked the question has to answer back “Honey I love you, but I just can’t smile” (without smiling.) The person in the middle can do anything to the other person to make them smile except touch them. You have to be the judge as to what you call smiling.
After the games, I passed out Olympic medals to everyone!
(My family cannot take a serious picture…)
While they ate their “medals” we talked a little about the 7 values of the Olympics, and how they apply not only in the Olympics, but in our everyday lives.
The 7 Olympic Values:
- Determination – doing your best and learning from your mistakes.
- Equality – treating everyone as equals, and treating them as you wish to be treated.
- Respect – considering others’ needs first, using manners frequently, and listening to others ideas.
- Excellence – never show talent half-heartedly, give it all you can.
- Inspiration – being stimulated to do something creative, and inspire other to do their best with their talents.
- Courage – forge ahead in spite of fears, be strong, brave, and steadfast when you are afraid or anxious to do something.
- Friendship – extending friendship to everyone around you, especially to those in your family.
Game nights are always big hits in our family, with both the young kids and the older ones.
This is a fun one, try it out!
Happy family night!
