The Spelling Bee… Like A Champ

I remember years ago, when I was in 4th grade, I was the top speller in my class!  Whoever got 100% on their spelling test each Friday for a month, was able to go to lunch with the teacher, and not just to the teachers lounge, but to Subway, McDonald’s, or somewhere fun!
Well….not to brag here, but that was me.
Almost every time. 🙂
Fast forward 37 years, and now my 4th grader has earned an invite to participate in the school spelling bee between the 4th and 5th graders.  We got the huge list and were completely overwhelmed!
We practiced and practiced.  We shed some tears and practiced some more.
ANYWAY..
Yesterday was the big day.
I sent her off to school telling her, “Don’t be nervous,” “It’s just for fun,” and “It doesn’t matter how far you go, you are still an excellent speller!”  She was a nervous wreck.  When I got to school and saw the 14 chairs lined up on stage, the 3 judges sitting directly in front of them, and the whole school in attendance to watch them, that’s when I got nervous!
(I know…it’s just an elementary school spelling bee..)
But I just knew she was dying inside.
This is the girl who inherited my “worry gene.”  Poor thing, I feel sorry for her already.
I just have to say how proud I am!  She got right up to the microphone, spoke so clearly, and did so well!
She made it to the final 3!
Her words:
cilantro, lasagna, incognito, excruciating,
and the word that got her out?
Acrimonious.
Killer.
Nothing beats the smile that was on her face when it was over, after facing her fear with so much courage!
Courage to do the hard things that really make us stretch.
We can all learn a little from the school spelling bee, can’t we?
Face a fear.
You’ll come out like a champ no matter the score!
